Japanese Film Festival in Sydney

Experience the best in contemporary Japanese cinema, from film festival favourites and box-office hits to independent gems and quirky anime!

The Japanese Film Festival in Australia (JFF) is presented by The Japan Foundation, Sydney. The JFF started in 1997 with only three film screenings. It has now grown into a program of over 40 films touring Australia nationally. JFF continues to showcase the newest films from Japan, curating a program that highlights a new generation of Japanese cinema with films ranging from art house to popular entertainment.

The 23nd Japanese Film Festival (JFF) celebrates diversity, highlighting unique stories told from unexpected angles and welcoming the exciting next generation of Japanese film-making talent. When you join them in the cinema this year, you might see a tenacious nine-year-old grappling with his wrestling father's alter ego, a hotel where any guest could be a killer or a musical and film hybrid of an OL's (office lady) struggles up the corporate ladder. No matter which films you pick, you’re sure to meet interesting characters at JFF 2019!
